Brushing your teeth is such a routine task that you perform daily. Sometimes, because it’s such a mindless routine, your technique can falter. You might even forget how to care for the tools you use to brush your teeth. This is why it’s important to brush up on brushing so you can refresh your memory of the fundamentals and help your smile. Our dentist, Dr. Jay P. Boyle, is happy to help you by sharing some brushing facts and information!
First, remember to brush your teeth twice each day for two minutes each time. If you have a hard time remembering to brush, post a reminder sticky note on the bathroom mirror. If you have trouble brushing for two minutes, turn on a two-minute song or a timer.
Second, remember to use the proper equipment when brushing. You should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. You should also use tools that have been approved by the American Dental Association. This helps you know that the tools are safe and effective in an oral hygiene routine. When you have used your toothbrush for 3-4 months or when the bristles have frayed, it’s time to replace it.
Third, remember to keep your toothbrush clean. You can do this by rinsing the toothbrush bristles with warm water after you brush. Then, store your brush in an upright position so the bristles can dry. Don’t put a toothbrush cover on the brush until it is no longer wet.
